“Too much life enters this house,” Tillie Olsen, the writer, labor activist and mother of four daughters, wrote in a letter to the poet Anne Sexton. Olsen and Sexton were among the early recipients of a paid fellowship from the Radcliffe Institute for Independent Study. In some ways, remarkable progress has been made for American women since then — at the time, for example, it was perfectly legal to fire a woman for getting pregnant. (In other ways, we have returned to the 19th century.) The book made me ponder whether some of the conflicts that parents feel between their family responsibilities and other parts of their lives can be fully resolved.

Read previewIt took a while for me to realize a common name was the best type of name for my son. On one hand, my son could stand out immediately like a rockstar — memorable, fun, free-spirited; on the other, he could seamlessly slot into society, a Daniel among Daniels. While unique names reflect a shift in our society toward a culture of individualism, they also have drawbacks that I was keen to avoid. And ironically, in a sea of unconventional names, Daniel stands out in an understated way. Firstly, my son has never been the only Daniel in school, so when someone calls his name, every Daniel within earshot turns around.

McKenzie’s accent is a bit wobblier than Hathaway’s, but once you’re over that hump, the pair are thrilling together. McKenzie plays Eileen as a wide-eyed girl in arrested development who might have been an ingénue if she’d ever had a moment to sparkle. That’s you, Eileen. Oldroyd’s cold but keen eye for women pushed to the edge of a nervous breakdown by boorish, violent men meets rich ground here. CNN —John Travolta says a near-death experience he had while piloting a plane in 1992 inspired him to take on his role in the new Disney+ short film “The Shepherd.”“The Shepherd” tells the story of a young pilot attempting to land safely after experiencing electrical failure mid-air. The premise is eerily similar to what Travolta, a licensed pilot, said he experienced back in 1992. “I knew what it felt like to absolutely think you’re going to die,” he said. And I thought it was over.”He ultimately made a safe landing “as if by a miracle,” he said. It’s why Travolta was drawn to “The Shepherd,” which is based on Frederick Forsyth’s 1975 book of the same.

We are living in a society where men don't really talk. We just thought, this can't be happening," said Marc Mailley, a fellow stunt artist who was there at the time. I choose to be a survivor," said Holmes, whose challenging medical journey is seen in the new film. Directed by former Harry Potter crew member Dan Hartley, the film is executive produced by Daniel Radcliffe. Holmes hopes his raw documentary might start conversations about stunt performers' work and what it is like to be disabled.

The 1976 book “The Hite Report” was a bestseller from the beginning. And it made its author, Shere Hite, a deeply polarizing public figure. But cultural memory can be short, especially when it comes to pioneering feminists — even ones who have sold 50 million books. “We love Shere Hite!” Newnham recalled Johnson and her producing partner Ro Donnelly responding. Seeing Hite walk out of an interview was not uncommon, especially after the publication of “The Hite Report on Male Sexuality” in 1981, which proved even more divisive.

David Holmes and Daniel Radcliffe Photo: HBO“The gift that keeps on taking” is how the inexplicably good-humored David Holmes describes his broken neck, suffered during the making of the “ Harry Potter ” films, on which he had served as principal stunt double for Daniel Radcliffe . Mr. Radcliffe, who is a major presence in and force behind the documentary “David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived,” helps tell the story of Mr. Holmes’s journey from movie set to wheelchair, one that might have left a viewer a tear-stained wretch except for the camaraderie on display, and the enchantment of lifelong friendships. David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived Wednesday, 9 p.m., HBOAs Mr. Radcliffe tells us, he all but grew up with Mr. Holmes, who was just a few years older than the 11-year-old unknown selected to play Harry Potter—“the boy who lived,” as Potter fans well know—and who served as a mentor-hero for the admittedly unathletic actor. Much of what Harry did on screen—flying through the air, piloting broomsticks through Quidditch games, being hurled through walls by Nagini the giant snake—Mr. Holmes actually did, as a young man who was small for his age but prodigiously talented as a gymnast and gifted with the kind of physical genius envied by those of us who lack it.

When David Holmes arrived at rehearsal to perfect a fight scene for the penultimate “Harry Potter” film, he was strapped into a harness that was supposed to send him flying backward. But Holmes was jerked back too fast, hitting a wall and breaking his neck, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down. His career as a stunt performer was over, at age 25. He had portrayed Daniel Radcliffe’s title character and others, including Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, Draco Malfoy and Neville Longbottom, since the franchise’s first installment. After years behind the scenes, Holmes will now tell his story in a new documentary, “David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived,” which is streaming on Max and will air on HBO on Wednesday at 9 p.m. and on Sky Documentaries and NOW in Britain on Saturday.

Daniel Radcliffe’s newest project is very close to his heart. “David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived” tells the story of Holmes, a gymnast who served as Radcliffe’s stunt double for ten years on the “Harry Potter” films before a 2009 accident on the set of “Deathly Hallows - Part 1” injured Holmes and left him paralyzed. Radcliffe is the executive producer of the documentary. “Being a stuntman was my calling in life, and doubling Harry was the best job in the world,” he wrote. The film includes personal footage from Homes’ life shot over the last decade, behind-the-scenes material from Holmes’ stunt work, as well as interviews with Radcliffe, friends, family, and former crew.

By clinging to legacy admissions, colleges are not only undermining claims of advancing equality but may be shooting themselves in the financial foot. 'A weak and sad excuse'The legacy preference has always been a dance of public intentions and private subtext. While the rationales for preserving legacy admissions have evolved, the propensity to obfuscate them hasn't. Harvard's massive $50 billion endowment makes it pretty clear: the school doesn't need to keep legacy admissions anymore. When Wesleyan announced it was dropping legacy admissions Roth was adamant that it was the right move.

Counting nose hairs in cadavers, repurposing dead spiders and explaining why scientists lick rocks, are among the winning achievements in this year's Ig Nobels, the prize for humorous scientific feats, organizers announced Thursday. The 33rd annual prize ceremony was a prerecorded online event, as it has been since the coronavirus pandemic, instead of the past live ceremonies at Harvard University. Among the winners was Jan Zalasiewicz of Poland who earned the chemistry and geology prize for explaining why many scientists like to lick rocks. “Licking the rock, of course, is part of the geologist’s and palaeontologist’s armoury of tried-and-much-tested techniques used to help survive in the field,” Zalasiewicz wrote in The Palaeontological Association newsletter in 2017. “Each winner (or winning team) has done something that makes people LAUGH, then THINK,” according to the “Annals of Improbable Research” website.
